Like the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), to reach International Astronomy IAO, candidates have to follow certain stages. These are National Standard Examination in Astronomy (NSEA), Indian National Astronomy Olympiad (INAO), Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT), and International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). IAO 2022 Eligibility Criteria
Following are the Eligibility Criteria for the International Astronomy Olympiad-- Candidates applying for the IOA should fall under the age of 14-18.
- Candidates should be studying in Classes 9, 10, and 11.
- Candidates with Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) are allowed to participate in this Olympiad, but until the training camp only. Only students of Indian birth can move ahead in the next phase.
- Candidates studying at the University or in school in Class 12 are not eligible for the International Astronomy Olympiad.
- Candidates appearing in high school exams cannot take part in the IAO exam.
- Alpha Group (Juniors)
- Beta Group (Seniors)

Below are the characteristics of all the groups participating in IAO-
- Participants in the junior category are under the alpha group. These students should not be more than 15 years of age on January 1st in the year when Olympiad is held.
- Participants in the senior category are under the beta group. These students should not be more than 18 years of age if they are participating in the Olympiad exam for the first time as of January 1st in the year when Olympiad is held.
- Participants taking part in the international astronomy Olympiad should not be more than 17 years of age if they are participating in the exam for the second time as of January 1st of the year in which the Olympiad is held.
- Participants taking part in the international astronomy Olympiad should not be more than 17 years of age if they are participating in the exam for the third time as of January 1st of the year in which the exam is held.
- Candidates aiming to participate in the international astronomy Olympia should be 14 years of age or older as of January 1st of the year in which the exam is held.
