Highlights

The University Grant Commission recently changed the UGC NET Syllabus 2023. (UGC). The number of papers has decreased from three to two. 

The UGC NET Syllabus 2023 is released by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The applicant must apply for the examination online. The exam consists of two papers that must be completed by all applicants. Paper 1 of the UGC NET is the same for all applicants, however, Paper 2 varies depending on the topic. UGC NET Exam Pattern 2023

The UGC NET 2023 examination will be held online (Computer Based Test). Before delving into the entire syllabus of the NTA UGC NET Syllabus 2023, students should be acquainted with the most recent UGC NET Exam Pattern 2023.
 
Paper Pattern of Paper Number of Questions
Paper-I The questions will be generic in nature, intending to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate.  50
Paper-II This is based on the subject selected by the candidate and will assess domain knowledge. 100

1. In both Papers 1 and 2, the candidate will receive 2 points for each right answer.
2. In the UGC NET 2022 test, there is no negative marking for wrong answers.
3. No points will be awarded for questions that are left unanswered or marked for review.
4. All questions are required.
5. If a question is discovered to be incorrect/ambiguous during the key challenge, the candidate who attempted the question and selected one of the right answers will be granted credit. If a question is missed, marks will be granted to all applicants.

  • The paper 1 questions wish to evaluate the candidate's teaching/research abilities. It will largely be aimed to assess the candidate's reasoning abilities, reading comprehension, divergent thinking, and general awareness.
  • The contestant will receive two points for each accurate response.
  • There is no penalty for wrong responses.
  • Paper-II is worth 100 points and is based on the subject chosen by the candidate.
 

Unit-I: Teaching Aptitude

  • Teaching concepts, objectives, levels of instruction (memory, comprehension, and reflection), traits, and fundamental prerequisites
  • Characteristics of the learner: Individual variances, teenage and adult learner characteristics (academic, social, emotional, and cognitive),
  • Factors influencing teaching include the teacher, the learner, the support material, the instructional facilities, the learning environment, and the institution.
  • Approaches of teaching in higher education: teacher-centred vs. learner-centred methods; offline vs. online methods (Swayam, Swayamprabha, MOOCs etc.).
  • Traditional, contemporary, and ICT-based teaching support systems
  • Evaluation systems: Evaluation elements and kinds, evaluation in Choice Based Credit Systems in higher education, computer-based testing, evaluation system innovations
 

Unit-II: Research Aptitude

  • Meaning, forms, and features of research, positivism and post-positivism in research
  • Methods of investigation: Methods such as experimental, descriptive, historical, qualitative, and quantitative analysis
  • Research Procedures
  • Thesis and article writing: Format and citing styles
  • The use of ICT in research
  • The ethics of research

Unit-III: Comprehension

  • A passage of text is given. Questions are asked from the passage which need to be answered.

Unit-IV: Communication

  • Communication: Meaning, types and characteristics of communication
  • Effective communication: Verbal and non-verbal, inter-cultural and group communications, classroom communication
  • Barriers to effective communication
  • Mass-media and society

Unit-V: Mathematical Reasoning and Aptitude

  • Types of reasoning
  • Number series, letter series, codes and relationships
  • Mathematical aptitude (fraction, time & distance, ratio, proportion and percentage, profit and loss, interest and discounting, averages etc.)
 

Unit-VI: Logical Reasoning

  • Understanding the structure of arguments: Argument forms, the structure of categorical propositions, mood and figure, formal and informal fallacies, uses of language, connotations and denotations of terms, the classical square of opposition
  • Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning
  • Analogies
  • Venn diagram: Simple and multiple uses for establishing the validity of arguments
  • Indian Logic: Means of knowledge
  • Pramanas: Pratyaksha (Perception), Anumana (Inference), Upamana (Comparison), Shabda (Verbal testimony), Arthapatti (Implication) and Anupalabddhi (Non-apprehension)
  • Structure and kinds of Anumana (inference), Vyapti (invariable relation), Hetvabhasas (fallacies of inference)

Unit-VII: Data Interpretation

  • Sources, acquisition and classification of data
  • Quantitative and qualitative data
  • Graphical representation (bar-chart, histograms, pie-chart, table-chart and line-chart) and mapping of data
  • Data interpretation
  • Data and governance

Unit-VIII: Information and Communication Technology (ICT)

  • ICT: General abbreviations and terminology
  • Basics of Internet, Intranet, E-mail, Audio and Video-conferencing
  • Digital initiatives in higher education
  • ICT and Governance
 

Unit-IX: People, Development and Environment

  • Development and environment: Millennium development and Sustainable development goals
  • Human and environment interaction: Anthropogenic activities and their impacts on the environment
  • Environmental issues: Local, regional and global; air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, noise pollution, waste (solid, liquid, biomedical, hazardous, electronic), climate change and its socio-economic and political dimensions
  • Impacts of pollutants on human health
  • Natural and energy resources: Solar, Wind, Soil, Hydro, Geothermal, Biomass, Nuclear and Forests
  • Natural hazards and disasters: Mitigation strategies
  • Environmental Protection Act (1986), National Action Plan on Climate Change, International agreements/efforts -Montreal Protocol, Rio Summit, Convention on Biodiversity, Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, International Solar Alliance

UGC NET Syllabus for Paper 2

The UGC NET Paper 2 will be based on the subjects chosen by the candidate. Paper-II will likewise include just 100 objective type questions (MCQs) for a total of 200 marks. The UGC NET Exam will comprise 101 courses in total. Candidates must choose one subject for the NET Exam, ideally one from their post-graduate studies.

For many subjects, has the UGC NET syllabus for Paper 2 been released?

The UGC NET syllabus for Paper 2 is released for 101 subjects. The paper 2 syllabi are released for:

  • Streams: Economics, Political Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, History, Anthropology, Commerce, Education, Social Work, Home Science, Politics, etc.
  • Indian Languages: Maithili, Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tamil. Telugu, Urdu, Arabic, Tribal & Regional Language, Santali, etc.
  • Foreign Language: Chinese, French, Spanish, Russian, Persian, German, Japanese,
  • Cultures: Arab Culture and Islamic Studies, Indian Culture, Buddhist, Jaina, Gandhian & Peace Studies, Comparative Study of Religions, Human Rights & Duties, Tourism Administration & Management, Yoga.

Is the UGC NET syllabus the same for Paper 1 and 2?

No, the UGC NET syllabuses for Papers 1 and 2 in 2023 are not the same. Paper 1 of the UGC NET exam covers teaching aptitude, research aptitude, understanding, reasoning, mathematics, data interpretation, and other disciplines. Paper 2 covers questions about the candidate's selected subject.

Which subject has the minimum syllabus in the UGC NET exam?

It makes no difference whether a topic has a large or small curriculum. You can only choose the topic in which you completed your post-graduate studies. You do not have the option of choosing a topic based on your syllabi or interests.
